PANEL: Soundtracks: The Power of Music in Film
Grammy-nominated executive Spring Aspers is President of Sony Pictures Music Group where she is responsible for all music initiatives including development, production and promotion.
In her position, Spring works with filmmakers to select songs, artists and composers for Sony Pictures’ films. For Bad Boys: Ride or Die, the fourth installment in the $1 billion franchise that kicked off this year’s summer box office grossing over $403 million worldwide, Spring coordinated the soundtrack that features a new song by Will Smith and Sean Paul, “LIGHT EM UP.” Spring also worked on Anyone But You, which features the nearly 20-year-old cult song, “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield, which hit Spotify’s 200 chart and increased 156% in streams. Last year, Spring enlisted Metro Boomin to executive produce the acclaimed soundtrack for the Academy Award-nominated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which received a Billboard Music Award nomination for Top Soundtrack.
Upcoming films for the Sony Pictures Music Group are Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night, which Grammy and Academy Award-winning musician Jon Batiste serves as composer for the film about a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers who changed television – and culture – forever; Venom: The Last Dance, starring Tom Hardy in the third and final installment in the franchise that has grossed over $1.3B worldwide; and a new Karate Kid, which will see Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan reprising their iconic roles in the pop culture phenomenon.
For the Academy Award-winning film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, she hired Post Malone and Swae Lee to write and record the song “Sunflower.” Since release, “Sunflower” reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, was nominated for Grammy’s Record of the Year and became the first-ever recording to be certified 2x Diamond. Spring worked with Taylor Swift on the soundtrack for Where the Crawdads Sing, which included Swift’s original song “Carolina” that received Golden Globe and Grammy nominations. For the Academy Award winning film Little Women, she worked with director Greta Gerwig and composer Alexandre Desplat on the film’s Academy Award nominated score. For Venom, Spring hired Eminem to contribute the title track, which was certified 4x Platinum with over 2 billion streams. Spring is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. She joined Sony Pictures in 2009 as Executive Vice President shepherding Diane Warren’s Golden Globe-winning song “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” from Burlesque and John Legend’s Grammy-nominated song “Tonight (Best You Ever Had)” from Think Like a Man. Previously, Spring was Senior Vice President at Island/Def Jam Recordings. At Island/Def Jam, she produced the soundtrack for the 2002 film Spider-Man, including the Grammy-nominated worldwide hit “Hero.” Prior to her time at Island/Def Jam, Spring ran her own independent music supervision company.
