PANEL: Art & Innovation in Music Videos

Val Vega, a filmmaker born in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, began her career directing music videos for major record labels such as Sony Music, Def Jam, Capitol Records, and Warner Music. This early work allowed her to develop her distinctive visual style while gaining invaluable on-set experience, collaborating with some of today’s most promising artists.

Among Val Vega’s recent achievements are directing the music video for Kany García and Young Miko’s collaboration En Esta Boca, as well as the video for Kany García’s duet with Carla Morrison, Que Vuelva. She also created the visuals for Kany García’s 2024 concert at the iconic Coliseo de Puerto Rico.

This year, Val has worked on multiple projects with the music production duo Full Harmony, directing videos for their songs featuring Alejo and Miky Woodz. She eagerly anticipates the release of videos she directed for Myke Towers, Luar La L, and Chinese artist Yico Tseng. Her portfolio also includes directing the entire campaign for Eladio Carrion’s beer, La H. In August, she directed all visualizers for Omar Courtz’s album PRIMERA MUSA. Val is thrilled to be serving as the creative director for Joyce Santana’s upcoming album.

Driven by the lack of Latinx representation in film and television, Val set out to merge her vivid imagery with compelling narrative storytelling. She honed her screenwriting skills at UCLA Extension and Sundance Collab, learning under the guidance of Puerto Rican director Ángel Manuel Soto (DC’s Blue Beetle) and the late Garry Marshall (Pretty Woman). Her short film MOLASSES, inspired by the life of her great-uncle, a sugarcane worker in 1950s Puerto Rico, premiered at the 2024 HollyShorts Film Festival, where it was screened at the legendary Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

Val is deeply committed to telling stories that place Latinx characters at the forefront without relying on stereotypes. Her mission is to focus on narratives rooted in her community, using Latinx talent both in front of and behind the camera to bring these stories to life.
